Despite the challenges posed by more frequent fires and the specter of climate change, our hope remains steadfast as we continue to plant saplings in optimal locations, typically above 1100-1500 meters. These sites are carefully chosen, often situated amidst rocky outcrops with sparse vegetation, ensuring minimal fuel load for potential fires. Additionally, we identify areas nestled between large rocks, providing shade from the scorching summer sun, while the sandstone substrate acts as a natural reservoir, retaining moisture vital for the saplings' survival.
Each tree is meticulously tagged with GPS coordinates and essential data, facilitating comprehensive monitoring and management. Our planting schedule spans four months, from May to August, strategically timed to allow the cedar saplings to establish themselves before the onset of spring and to better withstand the rigors of the warm summer months, typically from December to March.
We remain optimistic that the thunderstorms of summer will bring much-needed rainfall and natural nitrate minerals, fostering the robust establishment of our saplings for generations to come. Through our unwavering dedication and strategic approach, we strive to ensure the enduring presence and prosperity of the Clanwilliam cedar, safeguarding this invaluable natural heritage for future generations.
